The Lygature Global Health portfolio: where we are and what lies ahead

Global health. It has never been more apparent how truly global health challenges can be. They can impact us all, yet not all of us are lucky enough to benefit from new medical innovations. Some of the most urgent medical needs around the world receive the least attention and resources and this is precisely where the Lygature Global Health portfolio comes in, with its focus on finding solutions for unmet medical needs in some of the world’s most marginalised and vulnerable communities.

In the first in a series of interviews that highlight each of Lygature’s portfolios, we shine a spotlight on Global Health. We hear from portfolio leads, Remco de Vrueh and Kristina Orrling, who share their vision and goals for the Global Health portfolio and what the role of Lygature is in fulfilling this vision.

Within the portfolio, Remco runs the Pediatric Praziquantel Consortium as well as the DTECT-Schisto Consortium. Both projects deal with the Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD), schistosomiasis, with the former focusing on treatment and the latter on diagnostics.

Co-lead Kristina runs the other two projects in the portfolio – GNA NOW, addressing Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), and MMV-PDP, focusing on malaria transmission and relapse. Based on their extensive experience in drug discovery and development, particularly in infectious diseases, we asked Remco and Kristina to tell us about the role of Lygature in these Global Health projects, what they foresee in the future for the portfolio, and what it is that inspires them most about their work in this field.
