10 years of Parelsnoer Institute: enabling high-quality scientific research
The Parelsnoer Institute (PSI) offers researchers within and outside the eight University Medical Centers an efficient infrastructure and harmonized procedures for multicenter clinical biobanks. Since the launch of PSI in 2007, 18 large cohorts in different disease areas have been initiated. Together, these so-called ‘Pearls’ have published more than 30 direct research papers, many indirect research papers, and several design papers.
Within the Netherlands, the Parelsnoer Institute (PSI) functions as the national standard for clinical biobanking. To further improve health research in the Netherlands, several Dutch infrastructures, including PSI, are now collaborating in the national Health-RI initiative. Within Health-RI, clinical biobanking will be combined with population cohorts, technology expert groups, software tools and other research facilities to enable the development of novel personalized healthcare solutions.
PSI was established in 2007 by the Dutch Federation of University Medical Centers (NFU) to facilitate high quality cohort research. Its ‘Pearls’ are established from carefully-documented patients, while patient privacy is ensured. PSI facilitates uniform collection and storage of clinical data, images and human biomaterials, carefully aligned with the demands of the care process. This ensures seamless connection of high quality health care and scientific research. Furthermore, PSI is open for collaboration with external scientists, enabling easy and reliable cohort research.
PSI will celebrate its 10th anniversary on November 23, during the meeting "10 years of Parelsnoer Institute: Together towards a Sparkling Future".
