‘Back to the future’ during the Dutch Medicines Days
With a focus on sustainability, the 2023 Dutch Medicines Days invite professionals who are involved in pharmaceutical sciences to exchange the latest scientific results, experiences, and information to build and strengthen collaboration at regional and international level.
On 20 and 21 September, the annual FIGON Dutch Medicines Days (DMD) will take place at De Lievekamp Theatre in Oss. The location is no coincidence: historically, Oss is the pharma hot spot in the Netherlands. The DMD bring together leading experts from academia, industry, and regulatory bodies to discuss the latest developments and challenges in drug innovation. This year’s focus is on sustainability, sporting the theme ‘Back to the Future – Sustainability in Drug Innovation’.
The 2023 DMD program offers something interesting for everyone working in the dynamic field of pharmaceutical research or its application, with leading expert lecturers in plenary and parallel sessions, a poster walk where PhD students present their work, and ample networking opportunities.

Lygature has been involved in the DMD for many years, most visibly with Lygature’s Strategy Director Jon de Vlieger as board member of the Federation for Innovative Drug Research Netherlands (FIGON) and moderator during the first day’s morning session about the opportunities the National Growth Fund offers the life sciences and health sector. ‘The Dutch Medicines Days offer a unique opportunity to meet people involved in research and development of new medicines. I’m looking forward to many stimulating discussions and inspiring sessions.’
Lygature’s program manager Vera Nies will give a talk about pandemic preparedness in the context of regulation. The Regulatory Science Network Netherlands (RSNN) and Centre for Future Affordable and Sustainable Therapy development (FAST) collaborate to innovate the regulatory system to allow for an timely and adequate use of promising therapies and methods that can play a role in during the next pandemic. The first results of this initiative will be shared during this parallel session, which will be moderated by Pieter Stolk, Lygature’s portfolio lead regulatory innovation.
Other topics include the growing importance and opportunities of AI in drug discovery, the use of green energy in medicines synthesis, patient participation with impact, career opportunities in academia versus industry, and much more.
