Improving stroke outcome
In the Netherlands alone, 9000 people die each year because of a stroke. Many more people survive a stroke but have to live with the consequences, potentially including (partial) paralysis, speech impairment, incontinence, swallowing problems, tiredness and fatigue, memory problems and emotional changes. A group of 60 investigators has now set out to make a difference.
On May 1, 2017, seven Dutch and one French research institute established the CONTRAST Consortium (COnsortium for New TReatments of Acute STroke). Working closely with patient organisations, the goal of this multi-stakeholder effort is to develop innovative stroke treatments that improve patient outcomes and decrease the burden for those who survive a stroke.
Stroke is the generic term for both cerebral infarction and bleeding. Over 300 thousand people in the Netherlands count as stroke survivors. The consortium aims to fulfil a long-standing plea from patients, doctors and scientists for better stroke treatments. The total budget of CONTRAST is EUR 14 million, but the consortium aims to increase this by adding more industrial partners.
