The strength of partnerships in drug discovery: An interview with Dr. Ton Rijnders
The European Lead Factory (ELF) is a pan-European drug discovery project and flagship open innovation resource with the goal of finding high-quality leads for new drug discovery programs.
The project has gone through two Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI)-funding rounds, spanning almost 10 years in total. The second project term officially comes to an end in November 2023. To mark the start of the final critical year of this long-running initiative, an interview was conducted with one of the program’s founding fathers: Dr. Ton Rijnders.
Ton is a scientific leader at Lygature and was directly involved in setting up the ELF in 2013. Over the years, he has held several roles in the project including being a member of the project executive team, leading the public screening consortium, and chairing the proposal selection committee. Most recently, Ton has been managing the sustainability team.
In the interview, Ton reflects on the last nine years of the ELF and comments on the highlights and achievements to date. He also hints at what might lie ahead in the future for this unique drug discovery platform.
