World Health Day 2020: recognising the vital role of our unsung heroes

News News

Today, 7 April, is World Health Day – a global health awareness day celebrated each year under the auspices of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

It will escape no one that this year’s event takes place under unusual circumstances as the world grapples with the COVID-19 crisis. On the one hand, it seems strange to be ‘celebrating the world’s health’ when we are going through a major pandemic. On the other hand, the fact that we are all dealing with this crisis together seems to reinforce the reason for having such a Day in the first place – to draw attention to global health issues and celebrate the founding of the very organisation that is leading us through this unprecedented time, the WHO.

Celebrated under a different theme each year, in 2020, World Health Day recognises the vital role played by nurses and midwives in providing health care around the world. The aim of the Day is to trigger a wave of appreciation for their work, to catalyse support, and to elevate their profile in the healthcare workforce. There certainly could be no better time to do this.

At Lygature, we step-up to the call to action to celebrate these unsung heroes as they care for us during this global health crisis. As a small token of our appreciation, we have organised a delivery of flowers for those colleagues whose partners work in the healthcare sector.

Show your support too by spreading the word using the hashtag #SupportNursesAndMidwives.

Afterall, we’re all in this together.
