World Health Day 2021: Building a fairer, healthier world

News

Today, 7 April, is World Health Day. Celebrated annually to mark the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO), World Health Day draws attention to a specific health challenge of global concern.

The theme for this year is “Building a fairer, healthier world” – selected as a result of the social and health inequalities that have been exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The call to action for leaders is to work together, beyond national borders, to tackle the root causes of health disparities and increase investment in primary health care.

As an organization engaged in Global Health projects, Lygature heeds the call to action to mark World Health Day. It is our belief that the answer to many of the world’s health challenges lies in building the investment case for research into poverty-related diseases and mobilizing the right partnerships.

Commenting on the impact that the corona crisis has had and how it has changed people’s view of Global Health, Kristina Orrling, Lygature Senior Program Manager & Global Health Portfolio Lead said: COVID-19 has shown how important it is to forge partnerships in Global Health. The pandemic has been a hard awakening for a lot of people as to how important it is to tackle infectious diseases in a timely and collaborative manner. If we had worked more proactively and better together in terms of sharing information and knowledge, many of the very sad outcomes of COVID-19 could have been avoided. It has made people aware of how their personal health is influenced by health care decisions made in a completely different part of the world. It has also increased the awareness and knowledge of diagnostic and treatment development and distribution. Hopefully, this will be a lesson learned for the future.

Indeed, as stated by the WHO: “Our world is an unequal one. This is not only unfair, it is preventable.”
