World NTD Day 2023: Act now, act together, invest in NTDs
January 30 marks World NTD Day, an annual awareness day that draws attention to the inequalities of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). As an organization with projects focused on making a meaningful contribution to Global Health and NTD research, we are proud to show our support.
This year, in keeping with the 2023 World NTD Day theme, we join the call for securing sustainable financing for NTDs. Act now. Act together. Invest in NTDs!
Schistosomiasis and the Pediatric Praziquantel Consortium
Schistosomiasis (also known as bilharzia) is an NTD that affects an estimated 240 million people worldwide. NTDs like schistosomiasis are a cause and a consequence of poverty. Left untreated, the disease can lead to anaemia, stunted growth, reduced learning ability, and chronic inflammation of the organs, which can be fatal in the most serious cases.
It’s unacceptable that poverty-related diseases like schistosomiasis continue to stop children from being able to learn and develop. The Pediatric Praziquantel Consortium, which Lygature proudly coordinates, is committed to changing this. The Consortium has developed a potential new treatment option for schistosomiasis in children 6 years of age and younger, contributing to the ongoing efforts to eliminate the disease and improve child health.
The role of Lygature in the Consortium
The Pediatric Praziquantel Consortium is an example of the Lygature mission to bring together public and private partners to make a meaningful contribution to alleviating disease burden. The project relies heavily on Lygature’s expertise in both management and science. In addition, Lygature provides communication and dissemination support.
